7:04 am - Idea Price Trends

For the previous entry to this community, I added a comment with several rules of thumb on "good" ideas versus "bad" ideas, based on preliminary observations. Those simple rules of thumb would not have done too poorly for any idea investor, but there were two major deficiencies: (1) The main border between good versus bad keeps declining; and (2) There are more exceptions in the low-priced set than the two I'd mentioned.

7:43 am - Ideas

Some please explain in simple english for this idiot to understand. Ideas, where do they come from, how are they made, who makes them, where can they be bought, what's a good idea what's a bad idea, pretty much anything and everything about ideas. Help.

12:04 pm - This place alive?

Very little activity on here. From looking around, it looks like Blogshares isn't all that big on LiveJournal. I've got a question, is it unethical to add other people's blogs to Blogshares without their knowledge or permission. Seems the only way to get an acurate representation of blog interaction is have as many blogs as possible listed, not just those by players in the game. Of course there's the option for a blog owner to remove their blog from Blogshares. Let's have some input.

By the way, some stats:
User Since * 08:43 31 Aug 2004
Rank 8034 (overall standing)
(835.76% growth in net worth this month)
Total Worth B$7,472.45

Hopefully this will go up if they ever merge my blog that's in there twice.

7:00 am - *wave*

Hi... just registered at BlogShares.

So - I'm assuming that my LJ counts as a blog (ye gods, I loathe that word!) for the purposes of BlogShares. So: how do I claim my LJ? Or, more precisely, where on my LJ do I install the HTML snippet that BS mailed me?

current mood: sleepy

2:33 am - BlogShares is not dead.

The site is running up to speed and the code is being optimized to make it even faster. We're currently indexing in excess of 380,000 blogs, growing by about 2K blogs per day.

4:06 pm - blogshares will be back!!!!!!

The Bad News

The BlogShares database was corrupted and it's taking a few days to get things back together.

The Good News

A solid agreement has been reached between BlogShares founder Seyed Razavi and technologist Jay Campbell -- the site is coming back!

Premium memberships will be extended one month to make up for this downtime. If you had 8 months left, now you have 9.

The reconstituted BlogShares team is doing cartwheels over the possibilities that 2004 brings.

Check back for more notices, and soon a working site.

Jay Campbell @ 6 December

Update 9 Dec:: The spiders are spidering. We permanently lost the strategy blog and the forums but will bring back new community tools. BlogShares should be back sometime today -- DNS propogation will delay this a couple days for some users.

Update 8 Dec #2: The import went smoothly with this latest dataset. We lost only a few transactions, so as soon as we get the java spiders going we can start to re-deploy the game using current data.

Update 8 Dec: We recovered more than we thought possible; right now 2.5 gigabytes of "current" game data is importing.

Update 7 Dec #3: It looks like we're rolling back to November 23th. The system (roughly) works using dummy data.

Update 7 Dec #2: We're going to try earlier backups then re-apply what happened since then using transaction logs from other tables. At this point, some things have definitely been lost, but a full "game reset" may not be necessary.

Update 7 Dec: We're making progress on importing the data, and we should get the codebase installed soon to start internal testing. Our goal is to get the site back to where it was -- before making any changes to the functionality we want to hear from you, the members and bloggers that give this site life.

10:43 pm - R.I.P.

BlogShares is dead :(

BlogShares - Closed Down

Dear BlogShares players,

I am sorry to announce that BlogShares will not be reopening after the current technical difficulties are resolved. Currently, the database server is dead and looks to be for the next few days.

The latest system crash has highlighted to me that deliverying a fun, useful service for the BlogShares community requires an active operator and developer. As most of you are no doubt aware I've been neither for the past couple of months. That has led to a decline of quality service, new features and ultimately income for the site and it looked likely that there wouldn't be enough to pay for next month's hosting.

It's been an interesting and very rewarding nine months bringing a bit of entertainment to bloggers (and blog lovers). I'd like to thank especially all those people who donated money or their valuable time, those who became premium subscribers, those who worked on cool toys which made use of the fledgling API and all those who could be found on the forums and IRC channel. You turned a silly fun idea of a mad monkey coder in London into something worthy of the attention by thousands of bloggers and the press.

A special mention goes to Greg, Jay, Erika, Joe, Aine, James, Ashes, Morgaine, Patrick and Rob.

My goal with the project was always to embrace the power law and to provide a new way of highlighting blogs with a little bit of fun. I've been pleasantly surprised of how well it did and stupefied it did it for so long. Now, however, it is time to move on to other things. I'm sure you'll be hearing from me in the not so distant future. You can also find me at my perpetual home: monkeyx.com.

All the best,

Seyed Razavi.

What is the deal with Blogshares lately? I can get logged in, but it won't let me do anything. I keep getting page cannot be displayed errors when ever I try to look at my portfolio. It's so aggrivating.

10:25 am - Huh???

A month or so ago, I was given ten shares of a blog I'd never heard of as a gift.

Today I got this e-mail:

Your 10 shares in Family Bound: Wife, Mommy, Woman and Me <http://www.familybound.com/blog/> were sold at $419.79 ea. for a total of $4,197.92. This brings your account balance to $4,697.92 but the transaction will NOT be in your transaction history.
This was done because it was merged into FamilyBound.com <http://www.familybound.com/blog>.

I don't know very much about Blogshares, but I know that this is a cool thing. It's like someone gave me $4200. But can someone explain that last sentence in the e-mail?

I guess I've grown bored with blogshares and I'm planning to gift my shares away. Does anyone want them?

9:34 am - Hola

Hi! My name's Katherine and I have a blog that is listed on Blogshares. Before I had noticed this, people had already bought shares on it. I joined this community for tips on how to improve the price. And also to get more of a clue of what's going on.

1:46 pm - industries

hmm... I feel too little is done with industries. people should try to vote for industries more, as that will enhance the options of the industries, artefacts and ideas, and such.

from now on, I will be voting on the industry of each blog I buy shares of.
